The Jogorku Kenesh (national parliament) discussed abolition of prosecution for polygamy. Acting legislation (Article 153 of the Criminal Code) stipulates up to two years imprisonment for polygamy. Its abolition was suggested by Justice Minister Marat Kaiypov.
The parliament killed the motion. Polygamy remains a penal act in Kyrgyzstan.
