Tragedy in Andijan to be commemorated in foreign capitals

Andijani Tragedy Commemoration Days traditionally take place in May. Some press conferences and roundtable conferences will take place in Paris, Berlin, London, Washington, Stockholm, Moscow, Kiev, and other cities this year.

Commemoration Days will begin in Paris and Berlin on May 10. AKAT France, Amnesty International, and Association For Human Rights in Central Asia will call a press conference in Paris. Craig Murray (former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan), Nadezhda Atayeva (President of the Association For Human Rights in Central Asia), and Nuriddin Nizamiddinov (refugee from Andijan) were invited. Michael Anderson's documentary on the events in Andijan and international community's reaction will be run after the press conference.

Press conference in Berlin will be organized by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, and Association For Human Rights in Central Asia. Anvar Usmanov (Uzbek journalist and political immigrant), Eliza Musayeva (International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights), Barbara Lochbieler (Amnesty International, Germany), and Rechel Denber (Human Rights Watch) will meet with journalists within the framework of the press conference. Anderson's documentary will be run afterwards.

Presentation of Andesron's documentary in the Frontline Club in London will take place on May 14. Political scientist Anna Matveyeva will address the audience.

Press conference "After Andijan: Uzbekistan, Russia, EU - Dialogue, Partnership, or Support of Dictatorship" Ferghana.Ru already reported will take place in Moscow on May 14. It will be organized by Memorial Society and Committee for Civil Assistance.

Amnesty International will organize a press conference in Stockholm on May 15. Murray is expected to appear there.

Briefing of the Helsinki Commission of the US Congress will take place in Washington on May 18. Bob Templer from the International Crisis Group, Dan Kimmige from RFL\RL, Olga Oliker from RAND Corporation, and Bobur Malikov (former Uzbek Ambassador to the United States) will meet with journalists.

Similar events will take place in Kiev and Bishkek.
