Melis Eshimkanov, deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh (national parliament of Kyrgyzstan), turned down the offer of ambassadorship.
Eshimkanov himself declined comment, saying he was on leave of absence and promising all statements in September when the political season began again. 24.kg's sources in the Presidential Administration confirm that Eshimkanov was invited to the Government House on August 7. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was later informed that the lawmaker turned down the offer of ambassadorship in Switzerland made him in spring.
Eshimkanov is one of active organizers of protest rallies the political opposition staged in spring-autumn 2006 and April 2007. The widespread opinion is that he turned down the offer in protest. Local observers suspect that Eshimkanov and Bakiyev made some agreements and that no more harassment of opposition leaders was one of them. Instead of keeping their promise, however, the authorities sicced secret services on the opposition.
Felix Kulov, leader of the United Front, was summoned to the State Committee of National Security on August 1. Kulov was accused of organization of mass riots on April 19. Omurbek Abdrahmanov, United Front activist and prominent businessman, was interrogated within the framework of similar charges on August 7.
