Civil society urges the European Union to extend sanctions
Comments (0)
Claiming "worldwide support", representatives of the Uzbek civil society cabled a petition to the European Union, EU members, European Commission, and European Parliament insisting on extension of sanctions against this Central Asian state and a more energetic human rights dialogue with the Uzbek leadership.
The petition gives a brief account of the state of affairs in Uzbekistan and suggests the initiatives the authors think the European Union should resort to. It comments on the lack of progress in interaction with international structures in the Andijan investigation, suppression of independent voices in the wake of the tragedy, fabrication of cases against Moslems, torture, restrictions and encroachments on human rights and freedoms, and the use of forced labor of children.
