Uchkun Karimov, Chief of the Major Investigations Department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Kyrgyzstan, said at the press conference in Bishkek on October 19 that efforts would be made to have Aidar Akayev, the ex-president's son, extradited from Russia.

According to Karimov, the extradition request has already been cabled to Russia where Akayev lives nowadays. "The Russian Prosecutor General's Office, however, wouldn't grant us the request claiming that the matter concerns matters of Russian sovereignty and its inviolability," Karimov announced.

Abdygana Sheripbayeva of the Oversight Directorate of the Prosecutor General's Office claims that Akayev is wanted under charges within the framework of five criminal cases. "Whenever a citizen of Kyrgyzstan is abroad, the Code of Criminal Procedure permits his questioning right there but only whenever the citizen in question is a witness or victim. Akayev is a suspect, however, and that is why we need him here, on the territory of Kyrgyzstan. That is why we need his extradition," she said.
